There are many things one misses when establishing a new home five thousand miles away. Some can be replaced or done without, but others… never. I carry the rain deep within me—in all its forms—so I can conjure it up in the desert: the drizzle, the shower, the mist, and, of course, the downpour. I arrived in Las Vegas in 1992, a year that set a record as the wettest in the city’s history. Nearly ten inches of rain fell over those twelve months—an amount that might easily pour down on Costa Rica during a single brief storm.
But rain to me is more than just water or weather.
It was the nostalgia for rain falling on rooftops—creating a chorus of droplets that demanded silence before the thunder, pausing all activity until the storm passed—that gradually transformed into poetry. Missing my parents' home, the routined afternoon coffee, the scent of wet soil, the country that gave us life and shelter, and the thrill of a young girl secretly in love running home through the storm. That longing turned into verse, anchored by the certainty that rain—like poetry—will always arrive to save me. Over time, these memories evolved into A Slumber in the Rainfall—the collection I am proud to present to English readers today.

" —Paola Valverde Alier —.Costa Rica
